Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a small titanium screw that replaces the root of a missing or damaged tooth. Once in place, it fuses to natural bone in your jaw, providing a strong foundation for a crown that will look and function just like a natural tooth.

Implants can also stabilize dentures. Depending on your needs, Dr. Lane may recommend one or multiple implants.

Dental implants provide a variety of benefits over dentures alone, including:

  • A more natural appearance, which can boost your self-confidence
  • Improved speech, compared to poorly fitting or sliding dentures (or missing teeth)
  • Improved comfort, because you don’t remove them and they won’t slide around
  • Improved oral health, because they’re easier to keep clean

What are All-on-4® Dental Implants?

Dental implants require minor surgery, which could get a bit intense if you were to replace all or most of your teeth at once. All-on-4 Dental Implants allow for the restoration of your smile with only four implants, versus one metal screw for every tooth. Many people are opting for All-on-4 Dental Implants instead of dentures.

How is a single-tooth implant different from a bridge?

A single-tooth implant replaces the root of one missing or damaged tooth, whereas a bridge connects surrounding teeth above the surface. Unlike a bridge, a dental implant doesn’t require chiseling away at surrounding teeth. Implants also look more natural, last longer, and tend to be easier to clean than bridges.

Dr. Lane may recommend a bridge for you if the neighboring teeth contain large fillings and need caps or crowns, or if you aren’t a good candidate for an implant due to bone or gum loss.

How can implants help if I have dentures?

Dental implants help keep dentures secure. They basically do away with problems associated with wearing dentures such as discomfort, a less natural appearance, and higher maintenance care. If you’ve lost a fair amount of bone and lip support, Dr. Lane may recommend a removable overdenture which fits on top of dental implants.

They’re not only stable and comfortable, but can improve the appearance of your face by restoring lost support — the loss of which can cause sagging and wrinkles.
